Consumer Based Economy

Lifeless bodies wander,
lured by chimeras and empty promises,
pushing aside pain,
drowning in distractions.

Souls lament their neglect;
eyes refuse to look within;
hearts fail to understand;
minds choose to consume.

Meanwhile mounting deficits,
within and without,
threaten to swallow us whole.

A tiny plant
propels itself out of the
jagged crevice of a sidewalk
emerging into treacherous territory,

stubbornly confident
until fate’s indifferent hand
yanks it out of its unfortunate home and
tosses it into the dirt.

After a slow, painful death
it yields fertile seeds.

This time two plants spring forth
and the cycle continues.
